I was twelve back then and at school, the principal interrupted class to tell us. A few hours later I was home watching the whole thing on TV.

Woke up in my dorm, saw the first plane hit. By the time I got to the cafeteria, the tv there was showing the 2nd plane hit.
Went to classes and then went to work at the state capitol, which in hindsight it's surprising they let us come in considering no one knew if there would be further attacks and where.

I jumped in the car and went for a surf several exits up the freeway. Put Stern on the radio as I was getting on the freeway. At first, I had a "wtf" kind of reaction, thinking they were doing some sort of nonsensical bit. It took me two exits to figure out it was real, got off the next exit, went home, and woke up my gf. We were basically glued to the tv for the next day or two.
Interesting side note: There was an article in one of the surf publications the following month - I think it was Surfer Magazine. That day, September 11th, the weather was beautiful and there was a head high swell running on the east coast. New Jersey and New York had firing waves with light winds and summer like weather. Somewhere around two dozen people that worked in the towers called in "sick" so they could go for a surf. So yeah, surfing saved their lives.

I was living in Hermosa beach at the time and working in agoura hills. Someone interrupted a meeting we were in and said a plane hit the trade towers. We ignored it thinking it was a small plane accident. Then they said a second plane hit When I went back to my office the refreshed headlines kept reporting more and more missing planes. But many of the reports were wrong, just they had lost hf communication which is very common. But still I recall that feeling for an hour or so of ok what’s next. Is this the start of a real war or terrorists. |

I was working in IT as the IS manager for a company at the time, and for reasons I can't recall working at one of our sister sites from the office of our programmer. He and I wound up spending the day in his office watching the news on his computer giving updates to coworkers as they popped in to see what was going on.
My (ex) wife had just had gall bladder surgery and I wound up camped on the floor in our living room for the next week watching the news while she slept on the couch.

in the afternoon. Holy shit, someone had actually given Uncle Scam, the big bully,
a bloody nose. Never thought that would happen on his home turf. After a few
moments of remembrance, I had a couple of White Russians. 9/11 will always be

Joined him, we speculated and stared...then the second plane hit. Within minutes our phones weren't working and the internet was dog slow so I went into trouble-shooting mode and realized it was congestion and nothing I could do. Went back to watching TV most of the day. Our generation's Pearl Harbor, except with a twist as it wasn't a nation-state so there was no immediate fixing of the blame. |
