Politics aside, there is an "evolution of strategy" story playing out here.
We're seeing a tactical shift in how these foreign influence campaigns work. The 2016 influence campaign was generally rooted around anonymous bots amplifying extremist content. The ruble payments were rather straight forward.
Now we're seeing a more targeted approach where semi-visible figures already a part of US culture are selected for support and amplification. Payments are routed through other countries and organizations, obscuring their source. This is more insidious because these influencers already enjoy a level of trustworthiness that an anonymous bot could never achieve.

A lot of folks I know were sharing memes from a FB page called 'Being Patriotic', which was later in the Mueller Report as being run by GRU - Russian military intelligence. |
