I love basketball, but this year I didn’t watch a single minute of the NBA Finals. The matchup just didn’t interest me. But you know what I have been watching? I have watched every Indiana Fever game this season. I even subscribed to the WNBA League Pass so I never miss a game. And it’s all because of Caitlin Clark. To me, it’s fun to see her grow and improve at the highest level of the women’s game. Indiana started out winless (0-5, I think), but the team has steadily improved as they began to jell together. Clark is averaging about 16 points and 7 assists per game. Clark’s impact on WNBA attendance and TV ratings has been remarkable. Recently, the Las Vegas-Indiana game at T-Mobile Arena in Vegas had over 20,000 fans - an arena record. All this, and Clark might not even be the Rookie of the Year. Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky is averaging a double-double so far this season.

Aaaaand one day after my OP, Caitlin Clark puts up the very first triple-double by a rookie in WNBA history. She had 19 points, 12 rebounds and 13 assists and led the Fever to a big upset over league leader New York.

A lot of the veteran WNBA players are jealous of her popularity and wealth. They don’t seem to understand that Clark is single-handedly raising the league’s value (attendance, TV ratings, merchandising, etc.), and that they will all benefit from that in the long run. Some resent her because she is white and a heterosexual. To show you how much I am into Caitlin Clark these days, on Wednesday I woke up at 6:00 a.m. to watch her game Vvs the Washington Mystics!

Today, Clark set a new WNBA record for most assists in a game, with 19.

Sadly, she's not making very much money. Greg She’s actually making millions in endorsement deals - Nike, Gatorade, State Farm, Buick, Wilson Sporting Goods, etc. Thanks almost single-handedly to Clark, the WNBA just negotiated a new media rights deal that will pay the league more than THREE times the amount of the current deal. That means the players’ salary pool will also significantly increase. Everyone is benefiting from the Caitlin Clark phenomenon. Maybe the league might one day even turn a profit.

The Caitlin Simmers Effect Caity first came onto my radar four or five years ago when she made the finals of a 15 and under girls air competition held at the Waco wave pool. The following year, she dominated the Qualifying Series, which is how you get into the "big league" of pro surfing - the Championship Tour(CT). Only the top 6 or 8 women on the QS actually qualify, so it's a really difficult thing to accomplish. She qualified at 16yo, but sorta shocked the surfing world by relinquishing her spot on tour, deciding instead to surf with her friends and family and do a bit of traveling. This decision was supported by her two major sponsors - O'Neill and Red Bull. The following year, she again dominated the QS, qualifying for the CT a second time. She took her spot on tour and finished fourth in the world last year, also securing Rookie Of The Year. She currently sits in first place with only two contests left. She has driven viewership numbers for women's pro surfing way up, not to mention the fact that she will be representing Team USA in the Paris Olympics about a week from now. She's a little freckle faced, 100 pound 18yo that absolutely charges in heavy waves and has become one of San Diego's hometown heroes. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zw58IM80pE8www.youtube.com/watch?v=hs4_P4tRfzs&t=1329sSecond video gets good around the 6 minute mark. Sorry Jas - not trying to derail your thread. This little girl is one of a small handful that represent the future of women's pro surfing.

Maybe Caitlin can help change that. Here’s why I disagree about the “underpaid” part: The WNBA has been losing money every season. It depends on funding from the NBA to survive. Until that changes, the players cannot realistically expect to come anywhere close to what even the lowest-paid NBA players are getting. It’s the market at work. From a June 14 article: SOURCE

On the other hand, if the NBA has that much money they can afford to subsidize women's basketball, then why not? Where else should/could the money go rather than just shareholders' pockets?

Well, until this season, people had deemed that the product was not worth it. Plus, as I understand it, the more money the NBA makes, the more money its players make. I doubt NBA players are willing to sacrifice even 1% of the revenue base to give to the WNBA players. The good news is, the arrival of Caitlin Clark has exponentially increased the WNBA's popularity and visibility. There is no doubt that salaries will increase as a result.
