I accidentally killed a goldfish last week. I was cleaning the pre-filter on the outdoor fish pond. I got three orange goldfish out ok. But didn't see the one brown one (they start out brown, you know) until a few days later when I saw ants devouring it in the compost bin. But there's no shortage of goldfish in that pond.
PS-Don't tell Ira.

It was an ACCIDENT, you mother fucker!
The brown one was concealed by pond debris in the filter, and I NEVER SAW IT, EVEN WHEN I DUMPED THE FILTER CONTENTS INTO COMPOST BIN. It's possible that it was already dead by that point, I can't be sure.

No, you missed what I said. The baby goldfish are all brown. Some stay brown longer than others, but they all turn orange as they mature.

Sigh... OK, your error is assuming that future goldfish will all be caught in pond filters and if they are brown then they might be missed by their keepers during filter cleanings.
That is hardly natural selection, and it presumes that someone like me will be around in a couple million years, and that even then whoever it is will make the same possible error I made and miss the brown ones during routine filter maintenance. There is also the suggestion in your proposal that I am a goldfish predator, which is the opposite of reality. In fact I rescued the ancestors of these pond goldfish from the feeder fish tanks at local pet stores. They have found this environment to their liking and reproduced.
Or perhaps you're the kind that wants to swallow goldfish live, as is the story of early 20the century frat boys. Is that it?

I'll have you know that before my pet goldfish Ezra went into witness protection, he played winters in south Florida and summers in the Catskills. Now, he just lolls around his heated pool, chatting up groupers and drinking (you guessed it) like a fish. |
