Gosh, I dunno.
Perhaps an apology both before and after sentencing would be best. Although I don't know if either would make a difference. I also don't know what role he played in the crime.

However Camus wrote a book about that, "The Stranger".
Did you read it? It's about how little details influence condemnation and sentencing.
