It could, but I don't think people would be paying attention to that. The crisis "next door" supersedes what could be an existential threat because it's distant and hard to imagine.

It is truly, unspeakably extraordinary that we have found an object from outside our solar system, especially since it is almost certainly no more than a half-mile long. Something that small, coming across the vast emptiness of our galaxy, entering our modest viewing area in the century or so when it could actually be detected: the odds against ever seeing such a thing seem tremendous. We are truly fortunate to be alive in this moment.
