I thought I had the flu. COVID wasn't supposed to be here (upstate NY) in late Feb/early March. I had just had my biennial physical, including blood work and other tests. I was awaiting the results and a follow up appt as I got sicker, so I called my doctor to see if I needed to come back in sooner. She told me that if I had COVID, it would either kill me or it wouldn't, that there was nothing she could do for me at that point. It was like the first week of March by then. She told me to isolate in my basement office/rec room/man cave until I felt better, and to go to the emergency room if I really thought I needed to. The coughing was the real problem. For four days and three nights I coughed until I would almost pass out just from the coughing. It took every bit of energy out of me. I'd end up lying there, not coughing only because I didn't have the energy required to cough again. After three days, I realized that it was getting better.
I also realized (I was then 61 y.o.) that if this had happened to someone less fit at my age, or even me maybe five years from now, that it may very well have killed me. I have had some lasting effects, but I am slowly pushing myself back to where I was. I've lost 15 pounds, but that was the plan anyway. I plan to lose at least ten more. I've carried more weight than necessary for about thirty years now, and I had decided (with my doctor) that this was the year to lose it. I don't lift or train like I used to, but I still lift and train much more than most, and especially much more than those my age. Speaking of which, it's time to go run some hills.
Thanks for asking.

Thank you for sharing B.B. I've got four years on you but I'd like to make it to see my daughter get married some day.
Thanks BB.

Glad you survived Covid, Bama!
I hope I will do as well as you!
As I've stated before, with regard to Covid-19, it's not a question of if one will get it, but when. Hopefully most of the rest of us can avoid it until there's an effective vaccine.

I thought I might have covid a couple month ago, but my doc disagreed. He said it was allergies, although they couldn't explain my fainting spell at 2 am. Hasn't recurred, thankfully. And I took covid tests last month. Both the viral and antibody tests came back negative. I was slightly disappointed because if I had recovered from Covid I'd probably be immune today.
Although the scientific jury is still out on the immunity question anyway.
It's an interesting question. I've read that the genetics of Eastern Europeans shifted considerably during the years of the Black Death. The populations that survived had some innate immunity not so much to the bubonic bacterium, but to viral hemorrhagic diseases, which may also give them some immunity to some other diseases. Forget which.

And, of course, the Eastern European and Scandinavian partial immunity to HIV probably doesn't mean those with the beneficial mutation are immune to Covid-19, since the coronavirus uses and entirely different method (ACE protein) to invade humans.
But it's an intriguing look into the law of unintended, and in this case, beneficial, consequences.
Who knows, though. As Covid-19 wears on, perhaps the scientists will find that some people are more resistant to infection than others, and discover why.

This thing is a crapshoot. You don't know how it's going to affect you until you get it. If you're younger, it may not kill you but COULD affect your vital organs for life. It's as if some people are saying "I'll just get it and get it over with". The real answer is, for now, not to get it if possible.
