I know this is a silly question, but how are top singer-musicians able to sing and play their instruments at the same time?
Elton John on piano. Don Henley on drums. Eric Clapton on guitar.
I don’t think I could do both. Don’t you need to concentrate on playing your instrument?

Playing things like melody lines and chords can become "second nature" so you are not actively thinking about them while you're doing it. Like walking, talking, and scanning store windows all at the same time. One of the most difficult is playing bass and singing, because usually the rhythms are completely different. Geddy Lee was a master at that.

IIRC there was a blues musician who couldn't play his guitar and sing at the same time. Might have been B.B. King, though I'm not 100% sure.

If the rhythm is the same, it's actually not that difficult. Rhythm is the easy part. Not two different rhythms at the same time...unless one is really simple. Like, pound out quarter notes on a bass and sing on top of that? Yeah, that's not hard. But driving a bass rhythm with a a contrasting melody line? That would be terribly difficult. Unless you nail that part down so you don't have to think about it.
