I think part of the point of a “bow rider” is to sit in the bow of the boat.

Yeah...I wonder if they were sitting down or standing, or sitting on the edge. After all, you could be sitting anywhere else in the boat and still fall off. Not sure sitting properly in the bow of a bow rider is any riskier than sitting anywhere else in the boat...

Well, the way I see it, sitting on the bow of the boat means that if you fall into the water, you are closer to the centerline of the boat, and perhaps more likely to encounter the prop blade as the boat passes over you.

Could be, if you go right under the middle.

In this case, the boat size wasn't mentioned but the fact that only his one hand got nearly amputated indicates that it's still a very dangerous perch on any boat.

Well, on that boat. Pretty sure you’re okay sitting on the bow of a cruise ship.

Really? That would be a very long way to drop. Not good either.

Yeah, if you were sitting on the gunwale. If you were sitting on a chair, you'd probably be fine. It probably has more to do with horsing around improperly on boats than it does "where you sit."

I think the individuals in question were sitting on the wall of the boat in the bow. Like feet on either side, facing forward. That would be just asking for trouble, especially if the boat has a propeller. I used to crew on racing sailboats back in the day, and nobody ever sat on the bow unless they were fastening the jib. And that usually would be done at the dock. Plus there generally isn't a propeller on a racing sailboat.

I would add that occasionally if during a race there was a major shift in the wind, then yes, one would have to go to the bow to change the jib. But frankly I can't remember anyone sitting there with feet on either side of the jib stay. Even at the dock.

And, of course, most motor boats don't have jibs.

Here's a good explanation of the two main types of sails: The Jib, and The Mainsail:
