The other day, we pushed from the gate and THEN a passenger tells my flight attendants that he can't sit in his seat because the seat belt is slightly frayed. He's had 20 or so minutes to see this problem but he waited. Immediately, every passenger offers to trade seats with him. He refuses. We were completely full, so I told the controllers we had to return to the gate.
Meanwhile, a woman took BOTH her children to the bathroom. Those bathrooms aren't that big. How she got both kids in there I'll never figure out. But we couldn't go back to the gate to take the passenger off until she sat down. She told the flight attendants it was an emergency. They both had to go that bad? Both? Really?
And what kind of mother doesn't make them go before you get on the airplane? That's like literally the most motherly thing ever. You have to go to the bathroom before everything travel related.
Well, there happened to be a guy, in the back of the airplane that bought a middle seat "for cargo". I think he just didn't want to sit next to anyone. He's a genius in my book. While the mom was in the bathroom, the genius gave up the middle seat for the man that was scared of the frayed seat belt. The man with the frayed seat belt was pissed that it was a middle seat, but whatever, he's seated.
We can go now right? Nope.
We were in a foreign country and they have a law that a state inspector must sign off on all maintenance action. Now, keep in mind, there's nothing broken. There are strings loose.
So we had to go back to the gate and wait for the state inspector. It took him 30 minutes to get to the airplane and 30 seconds to tell us there was nothing wrong. But, in that time, the forecast had changed and we had to have an alternate airport so we had to take more fuel.
After we fueled, we left an two hours and thirty minutes late. Over a loose string.
