Only four more months before he is voted out, and then another three months before all his national power is stripped from him, like a cocoon from a grub.
Will American democracy survive intact? Will Americans return to our pre-2016 traditions of treasuring freedom, decency, fair play, and international peace?
We shall see.

Yes but it will take years of recovery, much like Shrub. Although he is a rocket scientist and a statesman compared to Trump.

My question is "Can this nation survive "Not Trump"?

My question is "Can this nation survive "Not Trump"? That question seems to imply that a nation needs to be divided in hate and gaslit to survive.

We've survived this long, don't see why that would change.
But, the Trump effect will likely change our traditions for the better. It is not enough that Trump be voted out. Someone like Trump must NEVER be allowed to harm us again.
The question has always been, is Trump a movement, or an anomaly. I say anomaly, a rare perfect storm of idiocy. It happened, and now we know the consequences. Most of them are negative, but some are positive, like bringing institutional racism to the fore, demonstrating how unprepared for a pandemic we are, and demonstrating how weak our economy really is (for individuals, not the stock market). Trump inadvertently will herald incredible change towards equality for every American. I realize it is the opposite of what his constituents wanted, but as I said several years ago, be careful what you ask for. You brought this on yourselves.

My question is "Can this nation survive "Not Trump"? That question seems to imply that a nation needs to be divided in hate and gaslit to survive. Not at all, a Republic is not a politically monolithic nation. It is a nation made up of states, politically. A politically monolithic nation is not a republic; it is a socialist or a communistic nation. If you see differences of opinion, political or otherwise, as a danger to our nation, that is very scarey to me. It wreaks of socialistic/communistic politics where disagreement is not allowed. Ideas are not welcome. If freedom of thought and expression of such thought is thought of as hate and need to be "gaslit" (where the hell did that idea come from?) then our Republic is near death. I hope I go before our Republic.

I wish I could share your optimism, but the Trumpbots will not just go away and hide during the next four years. I would not be surprised if they huddle, regroup, and launch new dastardly attacks on American democracy. They've had a taste of power and will not readily let that go.
I remember when Obama was first elected, a black poster expressed less than the enthusiasm I expected. When I asked why, he pretty much said he expected a backlash that would hurt the very people who voted Obama into office. Well, it took eight years, but the backlash did happen in the form of Trump, and he has hurt a LOT of people. The most I hope for at this point is to elect Joe and take back the Senate, so the healing can begin.

Which leads to the obvious question if he brought them to the forefront then his predecessors had no clue so how exactly does that make them better for their lack of insight? If he's so terrible why are they better for failing to addressing those issues?

The majority got complacent, and Trump happened. I predict that the pendulum is going to swing back the other way FAR worse than any Trump supporter expects, which is why I say they brought this on themselves. Had they elected a candidate who was at least a decent human, the disgust would have been way lower. But they chose a clearly inappropriate person for the job, and now we get to see the response.

Well, I hope you're right.
But I suspect the Trumpestilence will not be so easy to exterminate.

Which leads to the obvious question if he brought them to the forefront then his predecessors had no clue so how exactly does that make them better for their lack of insight? If he's so terrible why are they better for failing to addressing those issues? Abe, long time. They did. Trump either ignored (Obama's Police Task Force, 2014) or dismantled (Obama's pandemic task force, 2015) what his predecessors left him. www.politico.com/news/2020/03/25/trump-coronavirus-national-security-council-149285 if you care to read about it. What makes Trump terrible is his policies, his irreverence for his predecessors, and his general complete lack of curiosity. But ignoring all those significant points, the one thing he has failed to do is unify the country. If your big complaint about Obama was that he divided us, then choosing Trump to succeed him divided us exponentially more so. Biden doesn't seem to offend anyone too badly, and so I believe he has at least the ability to bring us back together. Whether he succeeds, time will tell. Freon

Freon But is being non offensive enough when Biden's mental faculties are clearly not there as has been discussed here? The reality is whoever the V.P. choice is....is the defacto President.
