Congratulations to the University of Hawaii women’s basketball team, who today beat UC Santa Barbara to win the Big West Tournament championship! The Rainbow Wahine roared back from a 15-point first-half deficit to nip the Gauchos late in the final quarter. Local girl Lily Wahinekapu and star sixth-man Daejah Phillips led UH with 19 points each.
This was the team’s second straight tournament title, but under completely different circumstances. Last year’s team was dominant and was led by a future WNBA draft pick. This year’s team started 1-7 and lost four key players for the season with leg injuries. Last night, the team flew in the four injured players so that they could be a part of the championship game festivities.
On to the NCAA Tournament!!!
