We lived in Hernando Beach. My wife's antique store was in Brooksville. We used to go up to Bushnell Bob's Auction in the Swamp there near you. Everything changed after the storm in March of 1993 wiped us out. It turned out that our mortgage broker had been pocketing our flood insurance premiums rather than placing us in the program. They went out of business, and we rebuilt with our own money. We sold our house in 1998 and moved back to the Finger Lakes region of NYS. we shopped at antique stores all over the area, probably at yours too. Do you remember Milk-away Farms in Brooksville? It was on the north side of town on highway 41 but inside the city limits. Great stories from my time there working for 2 bosses with completely different ideas about what I should be doing. Great guys though, I learned to not even say, but Sam told me or the other one told me,I don't remember the brother's name, I would just drop what I was doing and start the new task. There was also nephew Maurice?, these two guys and the nephew were saved by Schindler. I drove through Brooksville a couple of years ago and their farm was gone. And I now have a "favorites" button for WMNF in my car. Her shop was right by their farm. On Rte. 41, No. Broad St., just north of Howell Ave. on the west side of the highway. There were several 1920'-30's era bungalows by an old gas station that had been closed for years. Great place for antique stores. She and another lady each had a shop there.

I worked there in 79 until school started then I taught in citrus County

I have some trouble listening to that symphony.
Because it was used as a music composition study in a class I took in university.
Somewhere I still have the score in a little book.
It was a great groundbreaking work, though.

Interesting that, in a way, Beethoven's reaction to his deafness gave us the first great modern classical symphony.

Well, not entirely.
Mozart wrote a bunch of great Classical symphonies. What Beethoven did was to expand the genre and usher in the Romantic era of symphonic music. And before Mozart, there was Haydn. In fact, Beethoven once was said to have lamented, after Mozart's death and his tutelage under Haydn, that he was receiving the spirit of Mozart through Haydn. Be that as it may, with Mozart's last symphonies and Beethoven's Third, these works transformed from being comforting and pleasurable musical entertainments to thought provoking statements of purpose.

You're right. I amended my post back to its original form. I deleted the word "modern" so as not to confuse the issue. I should have known that you'd catch me on it.

My favorite Beethoven symphony has to be #6, the "Pastoral". Number eight is an oft overlooked gem as well. It's been a while since I've listened to any of them. Probably gonna play some tomorrow. Nothing better for clearing the mind of cobwebs.

This episode is perhaps both watching and listening: A PBS one hour bio of famous opera singer Maria Callas. I have a some old vinyl recording of Callas, Lucia di Lammermore, and Norma, to name just a few I spied in my ancient collection. I knew she was a bit controversial having a love/hate relation with music critics, but I've always been impressed with her delivery. I recorded the PBS bio and only caught the tail end of it today. I will watch it in full later.
Meanwhile, there is this:
Got seven and a half hours?

I was walking down my little street this afternoon, and heard some wonderful music coming from the open door of house inhabited by some very nice people.
I stopped and rang the bell. A few times. Finally Dave showed up and told me what the music was. I'm not actually sure if I found the exact music that so enthralled me, but I found it online and this track from it just blows me away.
See what you think:

Here's another performance of Beethoven's Seventh symphony. I think the Brits do a better job than the Dutch at it. The BBC Philharmonic is both tight and nuanced, and Mena does a fine job bringing out the softer side of Beethoven.

And perhaps David's most famous song (the Honda Hurricane was a popular motorcycle in the 80's):
