Just watched a fascinating episode of Nova, where in the first half it discusses a molecule I never learned about before: RuBisCO. RuBisCO (or rubisco) is a molecule deeply involved in the photosynthesis chain. That is, it is crucial to incorporation of carbon from carbon dioxide into molecules like glucose. The name was a joke thought up around 1979 by a witty scientist to honor one of his colleagues, apparently. Which is probably why I never heard of RuBisCO in any of my college botany courses.
