The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational was held this past weekend at Waimea Bay on Oahu’s North Shore. The surf contest is only held when the waves are at least 20 feet in height. The most recent Eddie prior to this year was in 2016. This year’s waves were said to be as high as 25 feet. More than 50,000 spectators watched the event at the beach.
The event is named after Eddie Aikau, a belovedHawaiian surfer and lifeguard who was lost at sea in 1978. He was part of the Hokule’a, the Polynesian voyaging canoe that capsized in the treacherous waters off Molokai. Eddie took it upon himself to try to swim for the shore to find help. He paddled on his board in the direction of the island of Lanai. The Coast Guard eventually rescued the crew, but Eddie’s body was never found.

Looks like fun. They make it look easy, but I know it's not.
