Well, if the monuments were discretely stored in a location where parents could choose to show their children, much like the dress-up shows you are so frightened of, then the analogy would be accurate. I figure it was just an oversight, but you forgot to whine that Ashe was also gay. You spotted the chance to be a victim of the statues being removed (this does not "revise" history, as the traitors are still traitors and the statues still exist) but you missed the chance to be a victim in yet another way because you didn't mention Arthur Ashe being gay. Not a new one. Probably. If there was one there from 1936 l'd be cautious about raking it down. We have Oliver Cromwell in Parliament Square; with over a million Irish or recently-descended Irish in London, this could be problematic but isn. Statues can become oart of very useful, even transformative, public discussion. An Oxford college- Oriel- wanted to remove a statue of Rhodes. Thats "Rhodes" as in "Rhodes Scholar" and "Rhodesia". I would suggest the ensuing kerfuffle, across the letters pages of every paper, on social media, in Parliament and in public, did more to educate about colonialism & empire than most school time. An historical - well, 1930s but you know what I mean- one of Adolf would certainly keep the debates lively and in focus about democracy, racial theories, prudence in treaty-making etc. |
