You most likely know that France is a gastronomical country, well, Lyon is a major gastronomical city in a gastronomical country. You have these incredible little restaurants that serves delicious meals for... less than you'd think (and a plethora of michelin guide three star restaurants when you feel like splurging a little) and you also have other things like ice cream houses that propose many flavors of high quality ice cream and unique preparations that you'll only find pale copies of elsewhere. I was a permanent resident in Lyon for several years, I've moved, but I still go there on occasion and never miss a gastronomic tour when I do.

Is it true the French eat french fries with mayonnaise? Greg Some do, I don't. French fries go with a lot of very diverse things... If say you eat your fries with potjevleesch, IE a traditional French Flemish dish, you have to use mustard... I mean if you don't it's a crime against taste. In the north they often put vinegar on their fries, it's really tasty when done right, but don't do that everyday or it will burn holes in your stomach. One of the most delicious things to eat with fries is mussels from brussels (and I don't mean Van Damme. ) (the mussels are not actually from brussels, the way they are prepared is). I've never seen anybody put mayo on that.

If you wish to eat well without hurting your finances too badly I can recommend: Les Adrets, Le Café du Jura, Notre Maison, Le Vivarais. They're all In Lyon, all in the yellow pages or even better on the Internet. Bon Appétit!

Greg My father told me about a time when they used to make these funnels with old newspapers, getting some of the ink on the fries... People said it added flavor. They also used newspapers as toilet paper, which would give them blackened asses. Ah, the good old days.
