This discussion of action films and politics has interested me for a while now. I'm a libertarian with extremely critical views about law enforcement and the police. Yet when I watch Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Dirty Harry, Robocop, and similar movies, I often find myself rooting for the police. I do recognize there is a disconnect between my tastes in fiction and how I feel about the police in reality. How do I square this? I can explain it thus: fiction and reality are two very different things. In these police films, the cops are generally the good guys. They are not policing for profit, escalating traffic stops, looking merely for drugs or contraband, or seizing private property without charges or a crime. On the contrary, in these films, the cops go after truly bad people (the kind who harm others) and do so at extreme risk to their own lives. In fiction, the police are altruists. It would be almost impossible not to root for them. Regarding the portrayal of black folks in movies, I am reminded of the insight that women are often presented in film/media in a fashion that speaks to the "male gaze," ie the perspective of men. Perhaps the way media portrayed black folks as criminals and thugs can be similarly attributed to trying to satisfy the "white gaze." And if some of our right-wing friends can be taken at their word, this marketing strategy was very effective. Many of us still believe that black skin equates to criminal, predator, or threat. They coyly mask their racism in talk about crime statistics but no one is fooled. why do you keep trying to pass yourself off as a Libertarian you are a far left Radical anarchist that hates America and supports communism. yet you try to pass yourself as human, go figure |

Do you not see how stupid it is to pretend that facts and statistics are just a mask for racism? None of us on the right believe that "black skin equates to criminal, predator, or threat". But the FACTS...the STATISTICS....the reality....makes those things more likely in and from the black community. Why is it racist to you when I point out the truth?
Only a full on leftist makes this kind of illogical and intolerant leap; pretending to be libertarian is really a just a little joke, isn't it?

Two points.
1. That is not the whole quote. 2. You are taking it out of context. He meant that white society is advertising that blacks are 'bad' and whites are 'good', and that this advertising (in movies, commercials, politics, etc) saddens him that it even is working on black people. When he turns around, the color of the skin of the person behind him should not matter, but it does, because he is as much a victim of that advertising as any American. He is ashamed of this.

In the 1940’s all the superheroes fought German Nazis. Even snoopy did some years later.
In the 1980’s every movie about evil enemies we fought soviets.
Then the enemies and terrorists were middle eastern
If you do a movie about gangs, chances are it will be against Hispanics and blacks.
Serial killers are usually white.
And Dirty Harry. Not sure which ones you are watching?? Most of his bad guys are bobby maxwell white dude I’m magnum force (and the liberal heads falsely accused the black guy), or the serial killer in the original Dirty Harry,

And in sudden impact it was a bad group of white guys.
All of his Dirty Harry movies the main bad guys were white.

It's mainly a phenomenon among the 3-4% of our population that are young black males. Statistically, they are many times more likely to be criminals. That's reality, not racism. Here's a lesson concerning the fallacy of what you said above. Most of the epidemic black crime is committed against other blacks. A racist would be gleeful that they are hurting and killing each other so he/she wouldn't even bring it up or care what is happening. On a related subject, a case could be made that pro-abortion folks hate blacks since they defend the slaughter of black babies while anti-abortion folks like me want those black babies to live.
