This is quite old, as well. The book came out in 2008 and the documentary was shown on PBS (what a shock!) ten years ago.
What Useless doesn't tell you is that Northern companies like U.S. Steel were using this labor, which numbered just in the thousands at its peak in the 1880s (out of seven million blacks residing in the South). Convict leasing ended by the 1920s, except for a small number in chain gangs.
While terrible and tragic, this was not widespread in the South, just part of the corruption typical in both the North and the South during that post Reconstruction time frame.

I ran across the www.pbs.org/video/slavery-another-name-slavery-video/ about a year or so ago. I thought it would be good to share over on BlueRidgeDebate.com, which has a number of residents (and former residents) of the American South as members. What happened is that a number of the regulars at BRD decided to take it personally, although that was never my intention. I suppose it was something of an educational experience, about how easy it can be to trigger some folks, even unintentionally. I won't name names, but I suspect they will reveal themselves here if they haven't already. And the show makes a very valid point, about how even with the end of slavery in America, racism and discrimination continued for at least a century, in a variety of forms. And it's quite evident still on the internet. |

Also, I never said it was limited to blacks, although obviously they were/are the primary target.
