But either way .. the Russian oligarchs ... in a petro state ... walk away with the oil.
Paying the barbarians off with a chest full of treasure is a time honored tradition. There's no shame in it.

Would this also involve an ethnic russian territory isolated within the boundaries of Ukraine, similar to gaza?

Calling what's planned in Saudi Arabia a 'peace summit' or 'peace talks' is a misnomer.

Last week the Russian bots were referencing tge Korwa War anniversary and floating ceasefire suggestions.
This seemed to overlook the uncomfortable fact that (most? All) of those Koreans left north of the ceasefire line (a) didn't want that and (b) have had 3 or 4 generations of shitty lives.
The Ukranian pisition - "get the fuck behind your own borders, pay reparations, co-operate with war crime tribunals, then we talk"- seems sound to me.
I'd applaud any such military support as suggested by your President and, had our Conservatives not dismantled our forces, I'd be behind us doing the same.

The get out part…

F Putin and what he wants. He has no authority over Ukraine or its people. He illegally took Crimea.

Since we're talking about Crimea, one could argue that Ukraine illegally kept it after Crimea declared independence in 1992. That may be part of the solution. Let Crimea and the eastern areas of Ukraine (currently occupied by Russia) have autonomy and self rule. This creates a buffer between the two bigger players AND satisfies locals, some want to stay with Ukraine, others Russia and still others an autonomous Republic.

Not really. This really only discusses the 1991 referendum. There's a lot more that was going on:
In particular, the independence referendum in 1992 was suspended due to the threat of force by Ukraine (which isn't addressed in your link):
Within a few months after independence, secessionist pressures mounted . A group collected over 257,000 signatures for a referendum to be held on Crimean independence . In May 1992, the Crimean Supreme Soviet declared Crimea's independence from Ukraine, but suspended the resolution after Ukrainian President Kravchuk warned Crimea that bloodshed could occur if Crimea tried to assert its independence from Ukraine. Could've been a solution, but Ukraine was opposed to Crimean autonomy and not sure that situation has improved. And Russian isn't keen on that either.
