African nations to send peace mission to Ukraine, Russia
Six African leaders plan to travel to Russia and Ukraine "as soon as is possible" to help find a resolution to the war, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said Tuesday. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have "agreed to receive the mission and the African heads of state, in both Moscow and Kyiv," Ramaphosa said...
Russia, Ukraine to receive African mission on potential peace plan, Pretoria says
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Tuesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskiy had agreed to meet a group of African leaders to discuss a potential peace plan for the conflict. Details of the plan have not been publicly divulged, although Ukraine's stated position for any peace deal is that all Russian troops must withdraw from its territory...
Russia agrees to extend Ukraine grain deal, Turkey says
Russia on Wednesday agreed to extend the deal allowing Ukrainian ships to leave the Black Sea carrying vital supplies of grain to the global market, Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said. The extension will help to ease a global food crisis exacerbated by the war in Ukraine, which Russia launched more than a year ago. Mr Erdogan said that the deal would be extended for two months...
Hungary to Block Further EU Aid to Ukraine, Minister Says
Hungary will block further European Union financial assistance to Ukraine for what its foreign minister said was an “increasingly belligerent” attitude on the part of Kyiv toward its European Union neighbor. “It’s fair to say that we’ve had enough,” Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said at a briefing in Vienna on Wednesday...
Ukraine could join ranks of ‘frozen’ conflicts, U.S. officials say
U.S. officials are planning for the growing possibility that the Russia-Ukraine war will turn into a frozen conflict that lasts many years — perhaps decades — and joins the ranks of similar lengthy face-offs in the Korean peninsula, South Asia and beyond. The options discussed within the Biden administration for a long-term “freeze” include where to set potential lines that Ukraine and Russia would agree not to cross, but which would not have to be official borders. The discussions — while provisional — have taken place across various U.S. agencies and in the White House...
Denmark offers to host Ukraine peace talks, wants India, China, Brazil to attend
Denmark would like to host a summit in July aimed at finding peace between Ukraine and Russia, but such a meeting would need engagement from India, China and Brazil, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said Monday... "It is necessary to build interest and involvement from countries like India, Brazil and China," he said. "It is hard for me to see" Russia taking part, he added...
How Ukraine is trying to woo the Global South — and why it’s so hard
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy traveled to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and Hiroshima, Japan, to make the case for expanded support from non-Western countries at the Arab League summit and the Group of 7 summit over the weekend. As Ukraine’s armed forces prepare for a counteroffensive in the ongoing effort to repel the Russian invasion, the US and European countries have, for the most part, been remarkably steadfast in their support for Ukraine via arms and economic sanctions against Russia. But countries like Saudi Arabia and India, which have important trade and security relationships with the West, aren’t jumping on board — partly because they have their own specific foreign policy and domestic development goals, and because they simply don’t see the war in Ukraine as their fight...
Germany, Hungary spar as tensions mount over blocked Ukraine aid
Germany and Hungary quarreled Monday during a foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels over the role a controversial Hungarian bank is playing in Russia’s war in Ukraine, according to four diplomats familiar with the exchange. The bank, OTP, has become a focal point for officials in recent days as Hungary is refusing to approve more EU military aid for Ukraine until Kyiv removes the company from a “war sponsors” list it maintains. Diplomats also say the dispute is delaying new Russia sanctions...
Hungary’s Orban says ‘poor Ukrainians’ cannot win against Russia
Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who is often out of step with his Western allies regarding the Ukraine war, has said Kyiv’s troops are unlikely to win the war against Russia. Speaking at the Qatar Economic Forum in Doha on Tuesday, he said the conflict which started 15 months ago can only be resolved by diplomacy...
Poland says no to any ‘artificial peace plan’ between Ukraine, Russia
Poland is keeping a critical eye on attempts to broker a peace deal between Kyiv and Moscow as the deadly war in Ukraine continues to rage and as questions remain over Russia’s next move. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy first laid out parameters for a "peace formula" last October and urged G-7 leaders at a summit in Japan on Sunday to help coordinate diplomatic steps, along with the ongoing military assistance, to help bring about an end to the war...
'Global South' will not lend support in Ukraine war, Mahathir says
Malaysia's former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said that countries of the so-called Global South will not throw their weight behind Russia or Ukraine in the ongoing war, despite the Group of Seven's recent show of support for Kyiv. Mahathir was speaking Friday at Nikkei's Future of Asia forum. The Global South including "Brazil, India and Indonesia, these people do not want war," he said. "They will not be supportive of the war between Russia and Ukraine"...
Facing Off With the West on Ukraine, Russia Reshapes World Order in Africa
As the United States and Western allies seek to isolate Russia over its ongoing war in Ukraine, a senior Moscow diplomat tells Newsweek he is leading the charge to strengthen partnerships across Africa. Washington has sought to expand its own influence across the continent, but a series of high-level interactions past and upcoming appear to show the Kremlin's campaign is gaining ground. Oleg Ozerov, Russian ambassador-at-large and head of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum, argues this is a reflection of vast changes in the international order...
NATO seeks to narrow differences over Ukraine membership bid
NATO foreign ministers will seek to narrow divisions over Ukraine's membership bid at a meeting in Oslo this week, with allies at odds over calls to grant Kyiv a road map to accession at their July summit. NATO has not acceded to Ukraine's request for fast-track membership as Western governments such as the U.S. and Germany are wary of moves that they fear could take the alliance closer to entering an active war with Russia...
NATO aspirant country blames NATO for Russia’s war on Ukraine
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was a reaction to NATO expansion, Georgia’s prime minister has said, echoing the Kremlin’s justification for the war in another sign of Tbilisi splitting with the West. Speaking at the GLOBSEC security forum on Tuesday, Irakli Garibashvili said “one of the main reasons” behind the conflict “was NATO expansion … the desire of Ukraine to become a member of NATO”...
Czech Foreign Minister: Ukraine needs to ‘transform’ before it can join the EU
<excerpt> ‘But let’s be honest,’ he adds, ‘Ukraine is not currently prepared to be a full member of Nato. Even if all allies wanted this, Ukraine is not technically ready. It’s now more about actively looking for the political will for Ukraine to become a Nato member one day, and I wish this would happen.’ </excerpt>
Ukraine is upping its campaign to get a firm promise of NATO membership eventually, working to sway wary allies before a key meeting this week. The foreign ministers of NATO member countries will gather for an informal meeting in Oslo on Wednesday and Thursday, where they are set to debate Kyiv’s request to join the defense alliance...
Estonia Will Ask For a Clearer Path for Ukraine to Join NATO
When NATO leaders meet for their annual summit in July, Estonia will ask them to consider a “roadmap” for Ukraine to join the alliance, Estonia’s minister of defense said Monday. “What we have to push in Vilnius is that there has to be a clear understanding [of] what are the next steps for Ukraine,” Hanno Pevkur said at the annual GLOBSEC conference here...
Macron urges Europe to find ‘path to membership of Nato’ for Ukraine
It may not be possible to send Vladimir Putin to face war crime charges at The Hague if he is the only person with whom the west has to negotiate an end to the Ukraine war, Emmanuel Macron has said. In a wide-ranging speech, the French president also set out plans for a fast enlargement of the EU, a reconciliation between the east and west of Europe and a clear path to Ukraine’s Nato membership...
And then a "peace summit" and excludes one party of the conflict:
Ukraine and Allies Plan Peace Summit Without Russia
Ukraine and its allies are planning a summit of global leaders that would exclude Russia, aimed at garnering support for Kyiv’s terms for ending the war, according to a senior Ukrainian presidential adviser and European diplomats. Plans for a gathering, while preliminary, have strong support from European leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron who are lobbying for participation by countries that have sided with Russia or declined to take a position on the war...
Blinken says no cease-fire until Ukraine gains upper hand in war
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Friday the United States won’t support peace talks in the war in Ukraine until Kyiv holds the upper hand, possibly after a Ukrainian counteroffensive that appears to be taking shape. Blinken said heeding calls from Russia and others, including China, for a ceasefire and negotiations to end the war now would result in a “Potemkin peace” that wouldn’t secure Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity or enhance European security...
Blinken Says Peace Deal in Ukraine Must Include Russia's Withdrawal
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Friday that a "just and lasting" peace deal in Ukraine must include the withdrawal of Russian troops for all Ukraine-held territories. "A cease-fire that simply freezes current lines in place and enables Putin to consolidate control over the territory he seized and then rest, rearm and re-attack. That is not a just and lasting peace," Blinken said...
Germany's Scholz: Ukraine security guarantees need to be different from Nato member status
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Thursday said Ukraine and its allies were still "very far away" from being able to secure peace in the country but added any future Western security guarantees to Ukraine needed to be different from the status of European NATO members. "Given the current situation, it is not about establishing a membership ... We all have to focus on how we as individuals can support Ukraine," Scholz said at a news conference at the second meeting of the European Political Community (EPC) in Moldova...
EU extends import curbs on Ukrainian grain, diplomats say
The EU executive is set to announce the extension until mid-September of temporary import curbs on Ukrainian grain and oilseeds that were due to expire Monday, three EU diplomats said on Monday. “The Commission has informed Member States of their proposal to that effect this morning,” one of the diplomats said. “Since the Commission has the authority to do so, effectively this will be in place from tomorrow”...

And Nikki Haley weighs in:
“China said they were going to take Hong Kong, they did it. Russia said they were going to invade Ukraine, we watched that happen. China says Taiwan’s next, we better believe them. Russia said Poland and the Baltics are next, if that happens, we are looking at a world war. This is about preventing war,” she continued. “Everybody wants to know well how does this war end? It would end in a day if Russia pulls out. If Ukraine pulled out, then we’re all looking at a world war.”
So, if Ukraine was in NATO, Russia wouldn't have attacked it. But Russia will attack NATO countries if it defeats a non-NATO member. Explain that logic to me.
France, Germany and Poland to discuss Ukraine and NATO
The French president hosted the German and Polish leaders to seek ways of helping Kyiv wrest back land from Russia. They were also expected to explore common policy on Ukraine's prospects of joining NATO. French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday welcomed German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Polish leader Andrzej Duda to discuss plans to help Ukraine defend itself against Russia. The three gathered to talk about military support for Kyiv's counteroffensive and humanitarian aid to the country after the breach of the Kherson region's Khakova dam...
NATO chief: Ukraine can expect security guarantees, not membership invitation, at summit
Ukraine can expect new security guarantees from NATO nations at the military alliance's upcoming summit, but it should not count on receiving a formal invitation for membership during the gathering in Lithuania. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been pushing NATO member nations to commit to accepting Ukraine into the alliance when the war is over to help deter future Russian attacks on the country. He said in an interview this month that he sees "no point" in attending the Vilnius summit without "a signal" or acknowledgement that Ukraine will be admitted...
Ukraine will not be offered timeline for Nato membership at summit in July
Ukraine will not be offered a timeline with specific dates by which it can join Nato at its summit in Vilnius next month but instead may be offered a shorter route when an offer of membership is made. The proposal, reflecting a gathering consensus of key partners in the western defence alliance, will come as a disappointment to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Nato members, but outside formal Nato structures, will also offer post-conflict security guarantees to Ukraine, which are likely to take the shape of broad commitments to protect Ukraine from assaults by Russia. They are also expected to continue to provide ammunition and to help the Ukrainian armed forces become more convergent with Nato. But the commitments are likely to take a broad high level form rather than be specific offers of weaponry...
NATO General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg on Friday said Ukraine has "moved closer" to the Western alliance in the past decade and called for a "framework to ensure Ukraine's future security" once the war with Russia ends. Speaking after a NATO defense ministers' meeting in Brussels, Stoltenberg said the members of the transatlantic alliance had agreed to "work towards creating a Ukraine-NATO council" in which Ukraine's status would be "equal to that of NATO member states"...
Biden ‘open’ to plan that eases Ukraine’s path to NATO membership
President Joe Biden is “open” to removing a big hurdle to Ukraine’s membership in NATO after the war, even if the plan doesn’t specify when Kyiv would join the alliance. According to two U.S. officials, Biden would welcome the removal of a Membership Action Plan, or MAP, for Ukraine’s entry into the military alliance. The MAP requires a candidate nation to make military and democratic reforms, with NATO’s advice and assistance, before a determination of membership can be made. By removing that requirement, Ukraine would still need to make some pro-democracy changes, but alliance members could at any point afterward unanimously welcome Kyiv into the club...
Zelensky: Ukrainian loss could force US to choose between ‘collapse of NATO’ or war
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday that a loss to Russia could ultimately force the U.S. to choose between the “collapse of NATO” or going to war. “If Ukraine would lose, if Russia would occupy Ukraine, Russia will continue going towards Baltic countries, Poland, etcetera,” Zelensky said in an interview with NBC News. “And they will start war with one of the NATO countries, and at this moment, the U.S. would have to choose the collapse of NATO or go to war”...
Why would Zelensky want to join a military alliance that is so fragile? Doesn't sound like it would offer much protection against future Russian aggression towards Ukraine.
Kremlin decides that goal to "demilitarise" Ukraine has largely been achieved
Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the Russian dictator, has said that the task of the aggressor country on the so-called"demilitarisation" of Ukraine has allegedly been largely fulfilled... "Indeed, Ukraine was heavily militarised at the time of the beginning of its [special military operation, as the Russian Federation calls the war against Ukraine – ed.]. And, as [Russian President Vladimir] Putin said yesterday, one of the tasks was to demilitarise Ukraine. In fact, this task is largely completed..."
Putin rebuts key elements of African peace plan for Ukraine
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday gave African leaders seeking to mediate in the war in Ukraine a list of reasons why he believed many of their proposals were misguided, pouring cold water on a plan already largely dismissed by Kyiv. The African leaders were seeking agreement on a series of "confidence building measures", even as Kyiv last week began a counteroffensive to push back Russian forces from the swathes of southern and eastern Ukraine that they occupy...
French Foreign Minister reacts to African peace delegation
Following a visit by African heads of state to Ukraine and Russia last week, French Minister of Foreign Affairs has reacted to the mission, calling it "positive". During a visit to South Africa, Catherine Colonna spoke about the African delegation. "From our point of view, any peace effort is positive if it aims to restore the principles of the UN Charter," the Minister said during a press conference in Pretoria...
Finland may cut aid to African countries supporting Russian war in Ukraine
Finland will not give any development aid to governments and countries that support Russia’s war in Ukraine, according to the programme of Finland’s new right-wing government, Foreign Trade and Development Minister Ville Tavio told YLE on Monday. ”Finland will not give development aid to governments or entities that support Russia’s war of aggression,” the new government’s programme reads...
France ‘to support Ukraine’s Nato bid’ to pressure Russia into peace talks
Emmanuel Macron, the French president, reportedly hopes the about-turn in policy could help end the war France is to support Ukraine’s bid to one day join Nato in an attempt to pressure Russia into negotiating an end to its war-amid concern that Kyiv will struggle to liberate all its territory, according to French reports... Defending that position as a “means of influencing the conflict and bringing Moscow and Kyiv to the negotiating table is the approach now favoured by France in the delicate discussions between Ukraine’s allies in the run-up to the annual Nato summit” due to be held next month, the newspaper reported...
Not sure that is going to have the desired effect, i.e., getting Russia to negotiate, unless you intend to offer neutrality as an alternative. Otherwise, it seems more like the road that led us here.
UK ‘very supportive’ of fast-track NATO plan for Ukraine
The U.K. would be “very supportive” of a fast-tracked accession to NATO for Ukraine, the British foreign secretary said. Speaking at a press conference at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in London, James Cleverly said Britain would support proposals to allow Kyiv to skip a so-called Membership Action Plan (MAP) in order to join NATO...
Scholz to NATO: Focus on boosting Ukraine’s military power, not membership
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Thursday that next month’s NATO summit should focus on strengthening Ukraine’s military power instead of opening a process for the country to join the transatlantic alliance. In a speech to lawmakers in the Bundestag, Scholz urged fellow NATO leaders to look “soberly” at Ukraine’s bid to join the alliance and argued that Kyiv itself had said “that joining NATO is out of the question” as long as Russia’s war against the country continues to rage on...
US to meet with Ukraine war sceptics like India, South Africa and Brazil to drum up support
The informal meeting will be attended by US security officials and country representatives later this week. Senior US officials will meet with representatives of several countries that have not yet condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine later this week in Denmark. The White House's national security advisor Jake Sullivan will meet with officials from India, Brazil, and South Africa – countries that have refused to follow Western sanctions against Russia...
Fearing Russian Escalation, Some NATO Allies Favor Hazier Line on Ukraine
Ukraine and its allies in the country’s war with Russia are fighting among themselves over how explicitly to mark out Kyiv’s future path to NATO membership. Differences over how much alliance members will pledge to Ukraine at their coming summit are so wide that some diplomats fear the dispute will overshadow the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s annual meeting. NATO has invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to attend the two-day gathering in Vilnius, Lithuania, on July 11, hoping for a robust show of unity. Some allies fear that a specific membership pledge to Ukraine could escalate the war by angering Russia and reduce the political space for a negotiated settlement...
Senators propose resolution threatening war with Russia if Putin uses nuclear weapons in Ukraine
Russia’s recent decision to send tactical nuclear weapons to neighboring Belarus is ramping up concerns they may use them against Ukraine. Now two senators are teaming up to pass a resolution to warn Russia if that happens it means war with the U.S. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democrat Senator Richard Blumenthal have introduced a resolution that if Russia uses nuclear weapons in Ukraine, it would be considered an attack on NATO. That would obligate the United States to go to war...
