Though the entire performance is as mesmerizing as it is masterful,
Maestro may jump straight to 18:00. For the rest of us, what tribal
West Africa brought to American spiritual music it also brought to
those much closer. Ours was filtered through Christianity, theirs
through Islam. Both the differences and the similarities astound.

Driving around Tampa Bay for a living in the late 1980's,
I got to listen to this guy pretty much every time he was on,
unless I was inside somewhere making money. Him & others
like David Fowler, Neil Rogers, Randi Rhodes, WTMP & WMNF.
Several dozen regular callers to these shows made those shows
better than what they were, even given the talent of their hosts.
Some callers played several characters. Some got their own shows.
The caller originally known as the Gulfport Attorney also played Ludd
and a couple other memorable characters. It was all spontaneous, and
it was great. Ludd went on to national TV and radio syndication as Lionel,
the articulate loudmouth Tampeño lawyer who tragically drifted too far right.
