Is there anyone else who thinks it's hilarious that "Not that there's anything wrong with that" has become a charm?
Funnily enough, I've been watching a lot of the Jerry Seinfeld show lately. And just the other day I was texting with buddies laughing about how this episode, Jerry was confused as being in a gay relationship with George. And every time Jerry protested "But I'm not gay!" he would follow it up with "Not that there's anything wrong with that!"
I remember when that phrase was born 30 odd years ago, it was a funny joke. It's used all the time. I literally just told my wife that a youtuber we both enjoy just hasn't been good lately and a lot of his videos are Christian based it seems. And followed it up with "Not that there's anything wrong with that!" and had a little chuckle at the timeliness of it given the conversations Seinfeld sparked the other day.
But I do have to say, watching those old sitcoms now is so illuminating. For one thing ... it didn't seem like or come across as a joke when Jerry said the chant in that episode. It actually seemed a bit ... fearful. I had to remind myself ... it was Hollywood in the 90s after all. When the seeds of what we're living through now were sown.
And fun trivia bit. That episode was actually the origin of the saying. If wikipedia is to be believed.
Isn't it interesting that Larry David and Jerry were both concerned about offending the gay community with that episode, and that's why the phrase was born?
